The first trimester of pregnancy is characterized by the changes that the future mother experiences in her body, preparing to host a new being inside. Mood swings, emotional instability and ups and downs in mood They are common due to the hormonal revolution, which is taking place in women. In women who have already been mothers, the abdomen begins to bulge slightly, while in newborns it will take a little longer to notice.

Nausea, vomiting, fatigue, drowsiness ... there are many uncomfortable symptoms that women feel at the beginning and in the first months of pregnancy. We tell you what they are about and how you can alleviate them:

1. Breast tension. The increase in breast tension is due to the fact that the breasts increase a lot in size, during these months, causing some tightness or pain. The areola becomes darker and the small bumps around the nipple swell, preparing for breastfeeding.

To prevent the tissues from losing firmness and favoring the breast sagging after childbirth and breastfeeding, it is advisable to take care of them from the beginning, applying moisturizing creams and using cotton bras, without underwire and with wide cotton straps. You may grow up to three sizes in the next few months.

2. Nasal congestion. Symptoms can be improved by administering saline solution through the nasal passages or by using a humidifier so that the environment is not so dry. To avoid nosebleeds, don't blow your nose too vigorously.

3. Dizziness and lightheadedness. When you feel dizzy, sit with your head between your knees or lean your back and bring your legs up. To avoid dizziness, avoid the heat and hot flashes, which can cause your blood pressure to plummet.

When you rest or sleep, do it on the left side. This posture facilitates the flow of blood to the organs and when you get up, do it without sudden incorporations. And also, try not to spend a lot of time fasting and carry some snacks in your bag to maintain blood sugar levels, since hypoglycemia is usually more frequent in pregnant women.

4. Nausea and vomiting. To ease symptoms, try the following tips:

  • When nausea strikes in the morning, make a couple of cookies the night before on your nightstand and eat them in bed to raise your blood sugar. Wait a few minutes before getting out of bed.
  • If the feeling of nausea worsens throughout the day, eat many small meals a day. They can be avoided if you eat little and more often during the day. To avoid dehydration, drink small sips throughout the day and eat a diet rich in protein, carbohydrates and healthy fats. Avoid saturated fat and include more vitamin B6 (also called pyridoxine) in your diet. Nuts, bananas, vegetables or whole grains are rich in this vitamin.
  • If vomiting occurs after meals, it is important to determine what smells and tastes may cause the sensation of vomiting to avoid them. Toothpaste, coffee, or tobacco are some triggers. Also, brush your teeth 20 minutes after meals and avoid flavored toothpaste.

5. Tiredness and drowsiness. Try to rest and sleep as much as possible at night. Whenever your obligations allow it, find time to take naps or sit back and relax.

6. Stomach upset. Avoid foods that promote acidity such as fried foods, carbonated drinks, condiments, coffee and chocolate, among others. Do not go to bed immediately after eating and drink an infusion of chamomile, sage or lemon balm after meals.

- Increased appetite
Break up meals throughout the day. You should eat small portions, but more frequently, so you will not feel hungry and keep your blood sugar levels in optimal condition.

- Bleeding gums
Use a soft brush to clean your teeth and do not vigorously brush the inflamed tissue.

- Frequent urination
The urge to go to the bathroom often increases as the size of the uterus grows. Avoid putting up with the time to go to the bathroom and drink about two liters of water a day to avoid retaining fluids.

- Renew your wardrobe
Tight clothes are not advisable because they can hinder blood circulation.
